The viral messaging application Signal has stopped working in the People’s Republic of China. This was the last US app freely working in China. As per the reports, users in China were unable to access Signal. Unfortunately, the Chinese had to use the application with a virtual private network (VPN). The website of the Signal has been banned in China since the 15th of March. Although, the app is still available in China’s App Store. Moreover, Signal stops work without a VPN in China. The iPhone version of the app has been downloaded more than 510,000 times in China. According to the research of firm, Sensor Tower, they can’t trace the download numbers on Google Play Store. As we all know the Google play store is unavailable in China. According to Sensor Tower; Signal has crossed over 100 million users around the globe with both Google Play Store and iPhone’s App Store. Moreover, after Elon Musk’s tweet about switching to Signal has risen the downloads it. The increase in downloads of the Signal app is because of the new privacy policy from WhatsApp. Many users around the globe have been switching to Signal or Telegram from WhatsApp.
Signal was gaining popularity in China. It was exposing human rights and laws and dissidents. The app’s increasing popularity in China is believed to have worried the officials. China authorities promote government censors to block these platforms. Tech-savvy in China can use virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass these platforms and access censored content or applications. The Chinese authorities are cracking down on the use of VPNs, which are illegal throughout the country. In China, people have been arrested and jailed for using VPNs. Only Chinese government-approved VPNs and applications are allowed.
