Microsoft Is Ditching Its Windows 95 Icons

Almost after 25 years, Microsoft is finally moving away from its Windows 95-era icons and coming up with a new design refresh.  Therefore, the software giant has decided to refresh its 95-era icons. Microsoft is getting rid of Windows 95 icons by following its Fluent Design System. The changes have been made as a part of a “sweeping visual rejuvenation”. As a reminder, “sweeping visual rejuvenation has been planned for later this year. In the Windows’ update for March, we already saw some new icons for the system.

In the March update, we saw the updated icons for File Explorer, Recycle Bin, disk drive icons etc. Microsoft has now confirmed that the Windows 95 icons you still see in your Windows 10 will be updated by the new icons. The redesigned icons will be for hibernation mode, networking, memory and floppy disk drives. This means that the era of Windows 95 icons have vanished.

Hopefully, with the new update of the icon of a floppy drive, it means Windows will never ask you for a floppy disk drive when you plugin into Device Manager for updating a driver.  As per the reports, Microsoft is expected to finalize and release Windows 10 Sun Valley update by the end of July. This Sun Valley update will be the first major release for Windows 10 after its previous version of 2004 that was delivered in 2020.

The software giant has delivered two minor updates of Windows 10 since its release, version 20H2 and 21H1. However, 21H1 of Windows 10 hasn’t been released yet for its users due to some reasons. Furthermore, Microsoft has already started preparing Windows 10 May 2021 update of version 21H1 for release. The company could start releasing this version for the users by the end of this month.

According to the company, all of these improvements for Windows 10 are happening because it is part of Microsoft’s design overhaul to Windows 10, codenamed Sun Valley. As we all know, tech giants have been rolling out their new updates for their users to create interest and hype. Therefore, the users will always engage with their apps, websites, software or any other tech-related thing.

Moreover, the visual changes for Windows 10 are expected to appear in the update of 21H2 of Windows 10. This new update could arrive in October, according to the company. However, Microsoft has not given the official details of its Sun Valley work. Meanwhile, the 21H2 update of Windows 10 is changing icons found in Shell32.DLL.

Additionally, the rounded corners icons will also be a big part of the new icon update. Also, the changes in the built-in apps and the Start menu have been leaked from the company.  Somehow, we’re expected to hear more about the leaks of Sun Valley’s work at Microsoft’s Build conference.
