Magnetometer:

Smartphones are equipped with magnetometer which is commonly known as a compass. A magnetometer can detect magnetic fields, so the compass app (magnetometer) in phones uses a Smartphone’s sensor to point at the planet’s the North Pole. Whenever you open Google Maps or Apple Maps on your Android or IPhone respectively, the magnetometer is used to determine in which way the map should be.

Depending upon various internal chipsets (processor), a smartphone will connect to one or more satellite networks.

There are four major satellite networks:
  1. GPS (USA)
  2. Glonass (Russia)
  3. Galileo (Europe)
  4. Beidou (China)

Most smartphones use the GPS network and others use Glonass. If the smartphone is Glonass compatible, it will connect to a larger number of satellites which will result in fast and accurate positioning of your device and the GPS app will work smoothly. Glonass is available not only in Samsung, Apple or LG smartphones but also on other smartphone’s brands. That’s the reason these smartphones connect faster to satellites as compared to other satellite networks.

Examples of chipsets:

For example, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (chipset) supports GPS, GLONASS, Beidou and Galileo. This chipset (Snapdragon 820) is found in smartphones such as the smartphones of Samsung; Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. Another chipset — Exynos 7880 supports GPS, GLONASS and Beidou. Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 is built with this GPS chipset.

New smartphone models are compatible with most satellite networks but you must make sure of that before buying one.

Elements for magnetometer:

There are 3 main elements that are important in magnetometer or GPS. The elements are as below:

RAM:

To run a navigation app quickly, your smartphone needs good RAM. At least 2 GB RAM is necessary for the proper functioning of a magnetometer. Don’t use a smartphone with low than 2GB of Ram as GPS will not run smoothly if they don’t have enough RAM.

Storage:

Storage is important for the proper functioning of a GPS or compass. You will need to store maps and other data needed by every GPS app. In general, a smartphone with at least 32 GB of internal memory is acceptable or required. Of course, you can run a GPS app using a memory card, but you need a very fast one to match the internal’s memory speed of your smartphone.

Battery:

The battery is also important because GPS and mobile Internet are the biggest consumers of a smartphone’s battery. So when you use your smartphone as a magnetometer, it can consume the battery within 2–4 hours. So it is necessary that the smartphone has a big battery almost 4000 mAH. Before buying a smartphone, check the battery’s health otherwise the GPS would not work properly.
