Discord ties up with PlayStation
The famous messaging app discord ties up with PlayStation after a minor investment from the unit of Sony Corp. As Reuters claimed last month, discord has ended the sales talks with Microsoft Corp. The deal was closed between the two because Discord wants to expand its business without help from others. The deal was announced on Monday by Sony Interactive Entertainment Chief Executive Officer Jim Ryan. However, Sony Corp and Discord Inc. have not disclosed the details of the investment.
As a reminder, discord is a messaging app like others. By using discord, its users can chat in the form of audio, video and texts. Initially, discord became popular among gamers and streamers. But from now, it has gained much popularity in the communities of sports fans, music groups and even cryptocurrency investors. This shows the popularity of the app around the globe.
Not just the popularity but also in terms of revenue, the app has been generating a good amount of money. In the last quarter of the previous year, Discord generated $100 million in the form of a private funding round that valued it at $7 billion. As we all know, discord relies on its premium subscription service for revenue.
Moreover, Discord has over 140 million monthly users worldwide.
The CEO of Sony Corp. Jim Ryan announced in a blog post that they want to bring Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and also on mobile that will be starting early in the next year. However, the news has yet to be confirmed whether the app will be available for the latest generation consoles i.e. PS5 or the older ones.
